Sculpting Science

Sculpting Science

ASU Ceramic studio photoshoot. Photography by Samantha Neal.

Sculpting Science started in 2014 when Robby Roberson, professor with ASU School of Life Sciences, and Susan Beiner, professor with ASU School of Art, began a collaborative study to examine ceramic surfaces at high resolution using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Their hope was that these interactions would result in ongoing exchanges of positive and synergistic ideas, creativity and knowledge to produce provocative and aesthetically pleasing works of art that would be displayed within the ASU community.

Sculpting Science is a unique fusion of art and science, ceramics art students used high-resolution microscopic images of nature for inspiration, and science students used this experience to find new and creative ways to present scientific information. This stunning exhibit features breathtaking ceramic sculptures, as well as incredible images of nature created by using extreme magnification.

Collaboration is a key element to this project. We photograph and make videos of scientists explaining the science behind the microscopy images as we as artists creating art based on the knowledge they obtained from the scientists. Once the artwork is completed we gather bios from the artists and work with our communication teams in order to develop videos, catalogs, signage and plan out the design for the exhibit for maximum viewer experience.
